UCAS preparation

A stronger application starts before the first draft.

Build a bank of real examples, reflect on your interests and give every part of your application a clear purpose.

A convincing application grows from things you have actually explored. Before polishing sentences, collect examples that help explain your interest in the subject and your readiness to study it.

Understand the current format

For 2026 entry onwards, the UCAS personal statement uses three questions covering your motivation for the subject, preparation through your studies, and preparation outside formal education. Read the current UCAS guidance and the requirements for your own application cycle before drafting.

Keep a small evidence notebook

After reading a chapter, attending a talk or working through a problem, record what interested you, what challenged your thinking and what you want to explore next. A specific reflection is more useful than a long list of activities.

Go deeper with one example

Suppose an economics article changes your view of a policy. What was the argument? What assumption did it rely on? What evidence might challenge it? Questions like these help you develop your own understanding and give you something meaningful to discuss.

Make a course-specific checklist

Alongside the written application, check whether your choices require a test, portfolio, written work or interview. Record deadlines directly from the relevant university and test provider. Do not assume all courses follow the same process.

Keep your voice

Feedback should help you express your thinking clearly. Read your draft aloud, remove repeated ideas and make sure you can explain every example. Your application should reflect your own work and experience.

Your next step

Pick one subject-related activity this week. Afterwards, write a short reflection rather than a polished application paragraph. You are building understanding first; the writing will have something real to draw on.

Our support can include course choices, personal statement feedback, admissions test preparation and one-to-one interview practice, subject to tutor availability.
